My 98
If you think this blog is a place for well known and boring Prodigy TSD remixes then you’re mistaken. There is a bunch of rare or never published mixes and related crap.
The Prodigy demo tape has been published a couple of weeks ago, and now I’m thinking - what the hell, it’s time for the OLD things”. Liam Howlett began with Roland W-30 with crappy features, I began with ZX-Spectrum. Today I’m going to start a “Early mixes” category.
What do you think I’m holding in my hand at this picture? Whatever you think - you’re mistaken. It’s a hardware mod-file player for ZX-Spectrum computer, world #1 computer, 20 years ago (if this makes difference to you). The sound card is “General Sound”, was developed by russian XL-Design scene group in 1997. It has 128kb of RAM (can be extented up to 512kb) and Zilog’s Z-80B as CPU running at 12Mhz. It’s not even Roland W-30, it’s not London’s underground, it’s something that came from level below Earth mantle. But that’s not a minus at all. Four 8-bit channels? No software? 500kb for samples? 3000 miles of taiga around? Shit features? Fuck W-30, fuck million dolars studio equipment, fuck school, fuck politics, fuck another Russia crisis, fuck the future, fuck the past - I got Poison. - That’s my 1998 and I’m 17.
And really, Poison is my favorite Prodigy track, I’ve done a dozen of mixes on it, some of them were not lost and will be uploaded to the site. The only sad thing that there is no “proper” TSD mix of Poison where I could use everything I know about sound, where I could find and dig out something with the same level. Unfortunataly, I’m not a citizen of UK, I’m not even a fan of Public Enemy, I’m a siberian dude, and a quite looser. But I should say I did my best in those old mixes with mentioned equipment. It’s a quite “Art of limitations”. Enjoy.
